elders and children braiding bread together

A Day That Changed My Heart at the Bakery

Near the end of last month we had a new experience at the bakery that not only warmed my heart but changed my life…truly.

A group of elders and teens joined us at the bakery for an outing as part of their Intergenerational Education. They learned to make braided bread together and enjoyed a catered lunch.

I have attempted to write this post numerous times with blurry eyes and fumbling fingers. This event affected me in the most positive way. Working with a group in young people and elders who were learning a new skill along side one another was simply the surface. Watching them share a meal, practice patience, kindness, respect and thoroughly enjoy one another company was a joy.

It prompted me to think about how every community and every culture should have this. A place where young people appreciate and respect their elders and where elders share their wisdom and their love of life long learning. Where both parties build a relationship and have company and a safe person in their community.

It was humbling, impressive and I was awe struck by the individuals that plan programs such as this and wonder if they understand the magnitude of how these experiences improve the quality of life in our small communities.

Thanks for including us. I learned and loved a lot that day!
